 Alexandru MÎRŞU Ph.D.

Vice Admiral Alexandru Mîrşu, a native of Constanţa, was born on the 17th of June 1962.

Commissioned in 1984, his first assignments were as artillery and underwater weapons department head on board minesweeper and corvette type ships, and commanding officer of corvette “Contraamiral Nicolae Cristescu” (31).

At squadron level, he served as artillery and missile specialist, operations and training office head. Upon National Defense University graduation, he was appointed as commanding officer of minesweeper “Lt. Dimitrie Nicolescu” (29) and as commanding officer of Minesweepers Group One. He also served as chief of staff and deputy commander, MCM squadron.

From 2005 to 2006 he served as commander, Black Sea Naval Cooperation Task Group (BLACKSEAFOR), when Romania assumed rotational command.

Ashore, he performed duties as chief of operations and as chief of staff, Naval Operational Command, and chief of operations, Naval Forces Staff. His next duties were commander, Frigate Flotilla, followed by deputy commander and commander, Fleet forces.

Starting December 18th, 2013 he was appointed as the Chief of the Romanian Naval Forces. A surface warfare officer by trade, Vice Admiral Alexandru MÎRȘU graduated from the “Mircea cel Bătrân” Naval Institute in 1984. His post graduation education includes post graduate course at the Romanian Naval Academy (1996), Advanced Command and Staff Course in Shrivenham, GBR (2003), Royal London College master’s degree program in London, GBR (2004), NATO Defense College in Rome, ITA, class 112. He also graduated several carrier courses in Romania or abroad in the area of staff duties, unit and brigade level command, peacekeeping operations, peace support operations security and good governance. Vice Admiral Alexandru MÎRȘU holds a Ph.D. title in military science with the paper entitled “Considerations on operating organic helicopters as force multiplier for Romanian frigates”.

During his career Vice Admiral Alexandru MÎRȘU has received various national and international awards, among them the “Faithful Service Cross” National Order; "The Maritime Virtue" Order – Knight, Officer and Commander, “For Merit” National Order – Officer and Knight; the Alabama Commendation Medal; “Emblem of Honor” from Armed Forces, General Staff, Naval Forces, and other commands; the Honorific Insignia “Service in the Armed Forces” for his 15, 20 and 25 years of activity.

He is married with one daughter.
