MISSIONS OF THE 88th RIVERINE PATROL BOAT SQUADRON

The 88th Riverine Patrol Boat Squadron represents the only specialized, equipped and trained force capable of fighting mines launched at the river, at any point of it, regardless of the season and hydrological situation.

In order to contribute to the security of Romania in peacetime, the division can fulfill the following missions/deduced tasks:
• Realization, maintenance and improvement of the operational capacity of the unit;
• Naval surveillance on river communication routes;
• Monitoring river traffic and adjacent to it, collecting and transmitting data to the Riverine Flotilla Headquarter;
• Discouraging illegal actions on the river, through active presence in high-risk districts/routes;
• Intervention in support of the national authorities, to combat naval terrorism, piracy, the prohibition of illicit traffic of dangerous goods on the river;
• Supporting the structures of the Border Police for tracking, questioning and controlling suspicious ships;
• Search and rescue on the river, transport missions to evacuate citizens from certain risk areas;
• Early warning of dangers and timely intervention in case of necessity.

To participate in the defense of Romania and its allies, the squadron executes missions of:
• Naval surveillance and naval traffic control;
• Defense of naval communications and military economic objectives;
• Participation in the annihilation of terrorist actions in the Danube Delta and on the river;
• Supporting the efforts to defend the Eastern border of the E.U. according to the treaties in force;
• Participation in preventing the landing of enemy sea, air and river landings;

To promote regional stability, including through the use of defense diplomacy, the squadron can perform the following missions/tasks:
• Participation in crisis response, peace support and humanitarian assistance operations in river districts;
• Joint intervention with the naval forces of other states;
• Participation with forces and means in exercises within NATO, PfP and WEU;
• Promoting Romania's interests on the river, supporting the diplomacy of the Romanian state.

To support state institutions and local authorities in case of civil emergencies, the squadron can be requested to carry out the following missions:
• Transport, in order to evacuate the civilian population and material goods on the river;
• Support granted in case of a CBRN accident;
• Transportation of emergency aid to isolated communities in extreme hydrometeorological conditions;
• Participation in combating river water pollution.
